Welcome
to the home of the Wild Game Feeders Association. We are a
non profit organization of outdoor enthusiast’s dedicated to
helping preserve our natural wildlife. We do this by
ensuring there is enough food to make it through our hard
winters in central Pennsylvania. As many people know it is
extremely difficult for deer, turkey and other wild game to
scratch or paw for food during the winter season when there
is over 12 inches of snow and ice covering the ground.
In 1960
while walking through the woods Paul Berger Sr. came across
the bodies of a few turkeys and other wildlife. After
further examination he determined that the animals had
starved to death. After talking with the Pennsylvania Game
Commission about the natural food shortage during the winter
season. The Pennsylvania Game Commission was opposed to the
feedings fearing that the animals would become dependant on
the feed and that if the weather became to harsh that
members would not trek into the woods with feed when the
wildlife could really use it. Paul and a group of friends
decided that the need to form "The Wild Game Feeders
Association" was a sound decision that could only benefit
the wildlife. They started working to set up feeders in the
woods and deep mountain terrain and filling them with corn.
Soon they
had over 300 feeders in 5 counties. Dues were $1.00 per
year. Members were entitled to a membership button and some
good times with good people, while helping to preserve our
natural wildlife. Every Saturday members would meet at the
local corn cribs, some traveling as far away as 75 miles to
pick up corn and deliver it to the feeders. Sometimes they
would have to walk the corn a mile or better into the woods
to be placed in the feeder.
Soon
there were over 5,000 members. They cut browse and planted
food lots. The main focus was to feed the wildlife. They
helped many animals make it through the harsh winters. Many
years they distributed over 70 tons of corn. They knew that
corn is not an excellent source of nutrition, but it is
something to help the wildlife get through the winter. It is
something to help them to make it another day until they
could find some browse or nuts.
Now
almost 50 years later things are a little different. We
have more wildlife and less food in the woods. We are
building houses and taking more farm land without thinking
about our wildlife. If we do not consider our natural
wildlife today, it may not be around tomorrow for our
children to enjoy as we do.
In 2003
we had over 1,400 members and we delivered over 40 tons of
corn. Over the past 4 years we have had around 700 new
members. Our dues are $5.00 per year. Not much more than
the original $1.00 a year.
More
and more people are recognizing the need to help our
wildlife. As well as getting the chance to spend quality
time with family and friends in our great outdoors. We hope
you enjoy our site and support our cause. Please, look
around and learn more about our organization. Help if you
can and please support our supporters.
